What is Baby Health Care?

Baby health care is everything associated with keeping your baby in strong, happy and in good health. This is everything from the way you hold him or her, to what you feed them, to baby sleep patterns; to what washing powder you use to clean their clothes and sheets. When it comes to baby health it’s important that you learn as much as you can beforehand – the more prepared you are when there’s a baby on the way, the more time you’ll have to confront the surprise challenges that every newborn brings with them.

Should I breastfeed my Baby?

Baby breastfeeding is one of the most natural things a new mother can do, yet it’s also something that has the most questions attached. How often should I do it? When should I start giving my baby formula? What do I do if my baby doesn’t suck? There are a few general rules to follow when it comes to baby breastfeeding. Firstly, don’t be upset if your baby doesn’t take to breastfeeding straight away.

It can take a few days before it becomes comfortable for both of you. According to the World Health Organisation you should breastfeed exclusively for the first six months and then continue breastfeeding as you introduce solid foods.

While this isn’t a practical scenario for everyone, as women want or need to return to the workplace, there are other options, such as express milking or a smaller length of time for breastfeeding, such as three months. It’s also important that you don’t forget the father when it comes to baby breastfeeding! It’s great that you’re getting to spend this time bonding with your new baby, but don’t forget to make sure Dad feels involved.

Who is at Risk of an Unhealthy Baby?

While there are certain genetic problems that are unavoidable, there are a lot of things you can do to minimise the likelihood of giving birth to a sickly child. A lot of these are common knowledge already, such as cutting back on, or out altogether, alcohol, smoking and certain foods whilst pregnant. It’s important to remember that while you’re pregnant you’re not just eating for two – you’re living for two, and one of you isn’t very strong yet.

Giving your unborn baby a comfortable, healthy start to life is one of the best ways to prevent unnecessary complications later in its life.

Being on certain medications while pregnant may also be a challenge. If you’re taking any kind of medication and you learn that you are pregnant, you should see your doctor as soon as possible to discuss any potential risks and, if there are any, what your options are for different drugs or other forms of treatment.

How do I Manage Baby Health?

The best way to manage the health of your baby is by being an informed parent so that you know what to do and what to look out for, and taking your baby for regular check-ups with trained professionals. Always remember that every parent and every child is different.

Your baby sleep patterns might be short naps, they might sleep all the way through the night. When you watch your baby sleep, check for their breathing patterns – don’t be alarmed when they take lots of short breaths, their lungs aren’t big enough for deep breaths yet!

Your baby might smile all the time, it might squeeze your fingers all the time, you might bond instantly and it might take time. Just be aware that there are lots of different ways of good parenting and try to find the one that suits you best. As long as you are aware of your baby health care, and you don’t forget your own needs, there is no reason that your child can’t have perfect baby health.
