What are Sore Eyes?

A sore eye is a condition involving inflammation of the covering of the eyeball and the inside of the eyelid caused by a viral infection. It is more commonly known as conjunctivitis. It can be very contagious so you should be careful around others if you have contracted this condition. It is spread by contaminated hands touching the eyes or through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Infected individual’s droplets that have the condition when they cough or sneeze can also spread it.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Sore Eyes?

Some of the symptoms you will notice when you have these conditions are the following:

  • Sore red eyes
  • Redness of the eye
  • A burning or gritty sensation in the eye
  • Eyes sore when exposed to light
  • Water like discharge from eye
  • Eyes may be difficult to open upon waking up in the morning
  • A runny nose or sore throat may also be noticed.

These signs and symptoms of sore eyes will usually peak in three to four days. The patient will usually recover from sore eyes in about ten to fourteen days. It is advisable to see your doctor if you suffer from these symptoms.

Treatment of Sore Eyes

If you think you may have sore eyes you should visit your local doctor. The treatment the doctor may give you is to take an anti inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops or an ointment. A warm compress can be applied to the eye for five to ten minutes about three times a day to relieve the sore red eyes. As with all viral infections the best thing is to prevent it in the first place and this can be done by:

  • Frequently washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water
  • Make sure you do not touch your face or eyes without first washing your hands
  • Do not share glasses, make up or towels with anyone else
  • Make sure if you have caught sore eye that you throw away any make up
  • Do not go swimming as bacteria can be spread in the water
  • Make sure you disinfect surfaces
  • Clothes, towels, pillows, sheets and anything that may have come in contact with an infected person must be washed immediately

If it is a more natural treatment you would like to try then there are also a few natural treatments available for sore eyes. The eyes can be bathed with tea made from eyebright. It can also be taken orally and a warm chamomile tea bag can be placed over each eye for ten minutes, which can help for the irritation and pain.

How to Care for Sore Eyes

If you do catch sore eyes it is a good idea not to go to work or school until all of the symptoms have gone and there is no discharge from the eyes. While you are at home you can do the following:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water
  • Use a clean tissue to remove discharge from your eyes and wash your hands immediately afterwards
  • To prevent making your eyes sore and any scarring that could occur do not use your contact lenses if you have the infection
  • Do not wear any eye make up
  • Use a warm compress on the eyes three times a day
  • Stay in a separate room from other family members
